Active
Any volcano that has erupted in the past 10,000 years e.g. Cotopaxi in South America and Mount St Helens in North America.
Dormant
A volcano that hasn't erupted in the past 10,000 years but is likely to erupt in the future e.g. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and Mount Tabor in North America .
Extinct
A volcano that is never expected to erupt again e.g. Mount Kenya in Kenya and Mount Warning in Australia.

Social Impact
Reduced unemployment- The development of tourism as a result of the volcanic eruption at Eyjafjallajökull created jobs.
Increased tourism and employment- After the eruption a promotional campaign led to a big increase in the number of foreign tourists. In 2008 there was fewer than 500,00p0 people whereas in 2016 there was over 1.8 million people.
Economic Impact
Generated income- A new tourist center was opened which is bringing in money for the local community
Fertile soil- Lava and ash are rich in nutrients, making the soils in volcanic areas very fertile and good for agricultural use.
