Carp, Calculus, and the Leap of Faith
Differences in people
Standing up to/for someone
When Ellen was standing up to Mary's bullies, she had perseverance and strength.
When Ellen was standing up to Mary’s bullies, she had perseverance and strength, when people help others who can’t do it themselves, it makes everything better
"'She said you always stuck up for Mary... And she wanted to thank you for being such a good friend.'"
This is showing that standing up for someone is doing good for people and that people are thankful for those actions
Ellen's stress with Mom led to standing up to her.
When having stress earlier on, you could develop overtime into a less anxious mindset.
Exposure to anxiety creates challenges for everyone, but having stress earlier on could develop overtime into a less anxious mindset.
Moderate stress test subjects "showed less anxiety than both the no-stress and high-stress groups."
This is proving the universal understanding right because of an experiment and real life evidence.
Perseverance/Strength
Peoples stress when still young can create more resilience
Stress is not pleasant, but having stress when still young can create more resilience
"Adults who faced some hardships reported fewer symptoms of psychological distress. They fared better than those who had experienced more hardships. They also fared better than those who had very few hardships as children."
This is showing that some hardships and difficulties faced when young cam build resilience from actual people and a lot of them (2,398)
Ideas of success
Mom’s idea of success versus Ellen's shows how different they are
Mom’s idea of success versus Ellen's shows how different they are, you can’t control how others feel or how different they are from you.
"'You need to well in math in order to get into medical school.'" I don't want to do to medical school. I don't want to do Math. I want to burn my calculus book.
This shows that no matter how hard Mom tries, Ellen will always want to do something else. Another thing that proves this is when Ellen stands up to Mom finally and she couldn't control Ellen any more.
