Supervisor meeting - 9th Nov 2020
Kate, Derek and Mark all present
Progress with literature review
Minety question
Contact Stephen to get in touch with Mike Stone and arrange visit
Which fabrics can definitely be linked to the site? What range is there in the fabrics?
Itinerancy often linked to dies found at Minety and further afield, but until range of fabrics made at Minety can be determined the conclusions of these dies cannot be certain
Need to write down different fabric descriptions for Minety to contrast these and emphasise this as a problem
Self-assessment
Stone thoughts
Explained strategy for analysing comparative materials and eventually Roman bath samples
Discussed possible alteration of strategy to restrict range of stone being sampled to more securely-contexted phases 1 and 2, i.e. up to the rebuilding in the mid second century
Really dependent on variation within blocks of stone, usefulness of thin-section petrography and comparative results of analysing with whole rock vs powdered sample in sample cups
Supervisors noted that the stone analysis had been a key concern of the project since its inception
Even if aims are not achieved in regards to the stone, samples may be reanalysed by other researchers so not pointless
While Hayward was unable to distinguish between source locations in the Bathonian outcrop, it might be that the resolution of stone from only the Roman Baths, and predominantly from the local area, gives me an edge and a clarity of interpretation that was lacking from his work and perspective
Write up summary of thoughts and explanation on change to stone sampling strategy and send to supervisors ahead of meeting next week
Objectives during lockdown
Thin-section and sample prep in the labs
Book a day or two per week
Work on mortar alongside CBM/stone
Potential for micro fabric analysis of CBM fragments within to assess recycling of CBM!
Implies that if phasing is known for the bath, then provides a terminus ante quen for CBM fragments within, and can thus inform on site/CBM chronology
Complete and submit CBM literature review
Prepare method statement for data storage and data storage plan that adheres to ADS guidelines
Download emails so that I have paper copies of permissions granted by the Roman Baths
Work out how to prepare reports on RStudio using test data
Organise analysis dates with Zosia for after lockdown
Email Tim Darvill to see if he has thin-sections
Email Stephen to organise full supervisory meeting
Contact Dave Parham at BU to forward a message to AJ Parker
Wait for contact with Rob Iles
Research microfossil use in ceramic studies
Identify different fossil types, sizes and geological deposits they are likely to be present in in Bath region
Follow up Patrick's articles
Discussed GAS crucibles
Good to get them off to someone who has the skills and time to assess them properly
Not everyone would have admitted they had made a mistake, and some would have kept them arguing that they would do them eventually, implying research integrity
Do not make the same mistake with the mortar!
Discussed Bristol lecture; if others are relevant in future email them around the department
