German Peasant War
Overview of war
Leaders- Radical Reformers and Anabaptists, but mostly Thomas Müntzer.
It took place mostly all in Germany, and some of Austria
-
-
Death toll was minimal- less than 100,000
Outcome- Martin Luther contributed to the peasants defeat. He suppressed their revolt and execution.
Economical effects
To start the war, it costed little to nothing for the peasants to destroy some land. The clean up process was where the money aspect showed. The wealthy people didn't make the mess, so they weren't going to pay to clean it up.
The peasants got nothing out of the war. They didn't have money to clean it up so the wealthy people taxed the farmers and they had to work to get the money to clean up the mess
Social effects
Nothing in the society changed after this war. Peasants went back to working and the wealthy people kept workers.
Wealthy people would rent their land out to farmers and make a money and working agreement. But that means that person or those people would be stuck on and with that land forever
The causes we put for WWI on our poster were Mutual Defense Alliances, Imperialism, Militarism, Nationalism and the Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
-
The German Peasant war didn't have anything to do with the military. So automatically mutual defense alliances, imperialism, mutualism, nationalism are out. The assassination did not have anything to do with the german peasant war.
Effects after war
German Peasant war- The wealthy people really had no effects after the war. They won. They still had their workers and didn't lose any money
The wealthy people still had land, workers and money.
-
Statism
The government has power and control of these peasants and they have nowhere to go or have a say in anything.
Collectivism, but kind of flipped into a negative way
They were focusing on the group of peasants as a whole. Peasants were working as slaves and getting no rights.
Rationality
For us now, them being used as slaves is obviously irrational because we know how people should be treated and people can not own people to use as workers anymore. In that time, it obviously was okay but still people thought it was wrong. Thats why the peasants fought for freedom because they knew they should be treated better.
Evasion
This maybe should be used as more of an after war effect, but the peasants who were being used as slaves and free work evaded the country in order to try to get rights.
Deaths
100,000 peasants died out of 300,000 who were in the war
-
Similarities
In both wars, people destroyed things and empires. It also encouraged independence
