Definition of war
My definition
A conflict carried on by a force of arms as a conflict between nations or parties within a nation. (my definition)
My definition of war kind of fit the Korean War. For example it is a conflict between North and South Korea but there are other parties like the U.S and Japan. I also said it was carried on by a force of arms and that was true because 5 million people died. This war was also caused by a conflict. That conflict was the spread of communism and that's kind of what started it all.
I think my definition of war is too broad. For example in the Korean war there isn't two defined nations because the U.S and Japan joined in. Also in my definition I said it's carried on by a force of arms and that is way to broad. Force of arms could mean many things like making people do stuff and it could also mean actually fighting with guns and tanks. I think my definition is also kind of wrong because parties not part of a nation can be at war too like ISIS.
Causes of war
Statism
The Soviet Union supported the spread of communism while most countries were against it. The Soviet Union was forcing the spread of communism on the people. This made communism spread.
Rationallity
Did the U.S actually need to go to war? The U.S thought the spread of communism was a big problem when in reality it wasn't a problem. So they pretty much jumped into the war without needing to.
Egoism
Russia wanted their form of economy to rule. They were saying my way is the only and best way. The proved it by going to war instead of letting other economies stay how they were.
Evasion
The U.S thought that the Korea was an unstoppable force. They thought that it was a much bigger problem than it was. Korea wasn't an unstoppable force but the U.S refused to believe that. So that is why it is evasion.
Impacts of war
Economic
Korea
North and South Korea remained diveded
The impact of the Korean War on the civilian population was dramatic because there was 3-5 million people dead, wounded or missing.
The Korean destroyed most of its industry. Lots of people lost jobs and even their own houses
North Korea fell into poverty. South Koreas economy was doing way better than the North.
There was pressure on the relationship between the countries because there were still American soldiers stationed in South Korea.
China
The war increased tension between the USSR and China as they argued over who should pay the bill for it.
U.S
They still thought that communism was spreading. Their foreign polices decision were affected.
The Korean War cost the United States $389.81 billion and about 36,000 lives
They made new alliances with Philippines, Australia ,and New Zealand.
Social
Korea
Families were broken up by the war and lived on opposite sides of the demilitarized zone. This means they were unable to visit or even communicate with each other if they lived on separate sides.
The tension during the war and after the war caused mental health issues like depression, anxiety and PTSD.
The war destroyed and separated families. It also destroyed economical and social structures.
Their morale was low after fighting in a war for 3 years.
Compare Wars
Causes of War
The causes of World War are nationalism, militarism, mutual defense alliances, and imperialism. The causes of the Korean War were statism, rationality, egoism evasion.
A similarity between these two wars was rationality. For example in both war countries only got involved because of their alliances. This relates to rationally because we question that if their reason for their involvement were worth it.
Another similarity between these wars is that countries got involved because they didn't like that countries had control over other countries. Austria Hungary had control over Russia and Serbia didn't like that. In the Korean war the Soviet Union had control of the Koreas and that's when Japan and the United states liberated them.
These wars also have differences. The Korean war was caused by egoism and evasion. WWI causes were more political. The Korean war got bigger because of the U.S and WWI expanded because of alliances with other countires.
Casualties / Deaths
In World War I 17 million people died and in the Korean war only 5 million people died. World War I lasted a whole year longer and there were more countries involved so that's why there were more deaths. When there are more countries they're militaries and weapons involved which leads to more deaths.
Impacts of War
After WWI the U.S had a lot more trade. But after a while their economy got going again. South Koreas economy thrived after the Korean War. Countries gained land after and during WWI. The Koreans were independent after their war. After both wars alliances were broken and formed.
North Korea fell into poverty so their economy declined.
