We use our teeth to break the food into smaller pieces
This is the physical breaking of the food
After chewing food, it goes down the esophagus to the stomach
In the stomach the food is mixed with enzymes and digestive juices
Like hydrochloric acid and pepsin
Pepsin has one of the lowest PH, with an amount of PH 2
The enzymes break down proteins into polypeptides
The pancreatic juices turn the starch into maltose
This passes through the small intestine.
cells in the villi absorb nutrients
Then it goes to the large intestine
Water is absorbed in the large intestine so as not to dehydrate
A layer of mucus protects the stomach from the acid
