POM
Management is a set of 5 general functions: planning, organizing, leading and controlling.
Fundamentals of Controlling.
Importance of Control
-Adapting to change and uncertainty.
Detecting irregularities and error
Reducing costs
Identifying Opportunities
Dealing with complexities
Decentralising decision-making and facilitating teamwork
Levels of Control
Strategic: monitoring environmental factors, assessing the effects of organisational strategic actions
Characterised by long-term time frames ranging from quaterly, annually to one decade
Tactical: Accessing the implementation of tactical plans at departmental levels,Monitoring periodic results and taking corrective action when necessary
Operational: Overseeing the implementation of operating plans, monitoring day-to-day results and taking corrective measures. (Short-term timeframe)
Concerned with budget, standards, schedules, rules and other specific outputs normally associated with particular individuals
Timing Controls
Feedforward Controls
Controls that take place before work is performed. They are very
future-orientated
.
Policies, procedures, and rules are established at this stage which is aimed at eliminating behaviour that causes undesirable work results.
There is an attempt of QC before they are part of the system
Concurrent Controls
Errors and problems are to be corrected before they become too difficult.
These take place as work is
being performed.
Present-oriented, to minimise problems as they occur.
To monitor on-going activities to ensure that all aspects of performance are consistent.
Feedback Controls
Measures that are taken after work is completed. Past Orieted, intended to correct problems that already occurred.
E.g. Performance appraisal review of employees. It is an attempt to take corrective action in order to bring performance back to planned levels
Leap
DISC test, where it showed how we would most likely are as a person.
D stands for dominance, these people prioritise getting immediate results, taking the immediate action, challenging themselves to the fullest. They are the type of people that value the destination than the process.
I stands for influence, they prioritise expressing enthusiasm, taking action, and encouraging collaboration. They are the creative juices of the team
C stands for conscientiousness, they prioritise ensuring accuracy, maintaining stability, challenging assumptions, they are the meticulous people where they will get down to each and every small detail they can find
S stands for steadiness, they are the type of people that prioritises giving support, maintaining stability, and collaboration.
In events, there are different ways of planning an event, the different segments of the events that coming together is what makes an event wonderful. There will always be many of such people with different DISC personalities coming together to make an event wok
Intro to hospitality and tourism
Seasonality
an important factor in the tourism industry. Economically, ecologically and socially it can have many negative influences on a destination, but at the same time, it may provide a time for both the environment and the host communities to recover from the stress of the peak season.
actors of seasonality are climate, vacation and holidays. For example, most people like to travel in warm, dry seasons, hence the popularity of summer vacations.
For vacations and holidays, people would take the time to unwind and go on a trip during the school holidays. It becomes a trend to see more tourists during the end of year period due to the festive seasons. The seasonality is spread out throughout the year.
Relation to Key Accs
he seasonality of events is also spread quite evenly throughout the year, mostly occurring from April to May, September to October, and January to February. Most events are planned in such a way where it fluctuates so that throughout the year, it will seem to be balanced and one quarter of the year will not look too empty or too packed.
Maslow
model that provided a good general framework for describing human behavior in this classic model. There are three higher-order needs and two lower-order needs. Lower order needs must be satisfied before higher-order needs become important.
The five needs are physiological, safety, belongingness, esteem, self-actualization.
physiological needs are basic survival needs (for tourism): rest stops or toilet breaks, accessible food outlets, shelters strategically located in the destination, clean drinkable water available at the destination
Safety needs are the perceived level or degree of safety which refers to reliable reservation services, medical facilities, and doctors available and such services provided in exotic or unfamiliar locations or destinations and airline safety procedures
Belongingness needs would be accepted in social groups which means referring to being on a tour group with people of similar backgrounds or and interests
Esteem needs refer to the desire for prestige, status, respect, and achievement,
Self-actualization need is solely for personal growth and fulfillment.
Relation
in the case of an event setting, Maslow needs will change accordingly.
For physiological needs a meeting room or an event hall should have a good decent temperature in the air and good ventilation, making sure the room temperature is adjusted so that everyone is comfortable in the environment they are in.it is good to have a strong Wi-Fi connection, so that people will share the vent and the event will get free marketing and advertising
For the safety needs, the event attendees will feel secure when they know there are guidelines to help when they need it. Providing maps, directories and even security ambassadors and ushers
Belonging needs can be activities that deepen the relationship among the attendees.
Esteem need is a higher-order need but they are very hard to fulfill in an event setting. Therefore, the best way would be to let the attendees to contribute to the event itself.
Self-actualization, people always come to events expecting to leave with inspiration, knowledge that improves their lives, and transformational experiences.
Tourism sustainability: More corporations now want to track the impact of their travel has on the environment; this is an important corporate trend. Intermediaries are scrambling to understand and meet this need.
Relation: The events industry is also moving towards sustainability, most events in the current day and age are trying to cut down on the usage of plastic or not even use plastics in the events. Event sustainability is a big part to take into consideration. Managing events takes into consideration three important aspects: environmental protection, social growth, and economic progress.
Relation to Key Accs
Key Accs is all about Managing.Events are meant to be a step by step through process.
Since Covid, there are alot of changes in the events industry, introducing the hybridity of events.
The need to adapt to change and uncertainty is key to the industry. We need to be quick on our feet and come up with solutions to the problems faced
Key Accs is a very "SOP" module -Having developed the strategic plan, establish standards of performance against which activities are evaluated to ensure the achievement of organisational objectives.
