DEFINITIONS
Heart attack
A heart attack (myocardial infarction or MI) is a serious medical emergency in which the supply of blood to the heart is suddenly blocked, usually by a blood clot.

- Coronary heart disease (limited blood flow because ou blocked or clogged arteries)
- Arhytmia (the heart beats irregularly)
- Heart failure (the heart can`t pump blood properly and the heart muscles overwork and weaken)
- Heart valve disease ( one of the heart valves doesn`t work)
- Cardiomiopathy (a thick heart)
- Pericarditis (an inflammation of one or more layers of the pericardium)
- Aorta disease (a portion of the aortic wall weakens and baloons out)
SYMPTOMS
- chest pain
- shortness of breath
- feeling weak or lightheaded (or both)
- an overwhelming feeling of anxiety
TREATMENT
- chew and then swallow a tablet of aspirin while waiting for an ambulance
- using medicines to dissolve blood clots (in hospital)
OR
- surgery to help restore blood to the heart (in hospital)
RECOVERY
- reduce your risk of another heart attack through a combination of lifestyle changes (such as eating a healthy diet), and medicines (such as statins)
- gradually restore your physical fitness so you can resume normal activities
COMPLICATIONS
- arrhythmias
- cardiogenic shock
- heart rupture
These complications can happen quickly after a heart attack and are a leading cause of death!
PREVENTION
- quit smoking (if you are)
- lose weight (if you`re overweight)
- do regular exercise
- eat a low-fat, high-fibre die
- moderate your alcohol consumption
