Laptops and devices enable the workforce to become more mobile either working from home or hot desking, allowing organisations to reduce costs of overheads for premises

Flexible working has the benefit of allowing staff the ability to balance the needs of their employer with those of their personal lives
The ability to access organisational systems regardless of location mean that employees may feel under pressure to be available at all times
Cross functional or project teams working across jurisdictions can benefit from technology such as video conferencing and instant messaging accessible from mobile devices to enable colleagues to keep in contact
The concept of the virtual team was only possible following the advent of technology such as telecommunications, email and instant messaging
Virtual teams also have the advantages of lower office costs, flexbility and increased productivity
Virtual teams also allow organisations to provide 24 hour coverage by scheduling the team members to work across different time zones and provide a wider talent pool for recruitment
While technology can facilitate virtual and flexible working, it can also present challenges
Those working outside the office require access to systems through reliable and secure internet connections and technology
Where laptops and devices are taken out of office premises, they and the organisations data are at higher risk of being stolen or lost
If any part of the dependent technology fails, employees are reliant on the IT support teams being able to resolve the issues to continue working remotely
Remote working can also lead to communication issues, non-verbal communication such as through emails or texts can be misjudged and can lead to a lack of trust and collaboration
Tools such as video conferencing using webcams so that body language and facial expressions can be observed can somewhat mitigate these issues
Unless carefully managed, remote working can lead an employee feeling isolated thus not meeting their needs of belonging which can result in them becoming disengaged and demotivated
