Cell
-
Cytoplasm
Gel like material that fills the cell. In prokaryotic cells, everything happens in it. Eukaryotic cells have organelles.
-
Nucleus
Most functions in Eukaryotic cells are controlled by the nucleus. It has chromosomes which are composed of DNA. Surrounded by a double membrane called nuclear envelope, which contains proteins that allow RNA and other materials to enter and exit the cell.
Nucleolus is a denser area of the nucleus, where DNA is concentrated.
Mitochondria
It is the powerhouse of the Cell, it has its own DNA. Cellular respiration happens here, provides the cell with ATP. Bound by a double membrane, the inner membrane had many folds called Cristae that does cellular respiration.
Ribosomes
Small, roughly spherical organelles that make proteins. Does not have a membrane. Some of them are found floating in the Cytoplasm, others can be attached to the rough Endoplasmic reticulum.
-
Golgi Apparatus
Contains sacs that receive materials from the ER. Modifies, collects, packages, and distributes molecules inside or outside the cells.
-
Lysosomes
Contain enzymes the digest material in the cell. Breaks down old cell parts, the cell its self when its time to die, and macro molecules. Maintains the health of the cells, as it can also kill viruses.
-
Vacuole
It is a storage space. Stores Food, water, carbs, enzymes, salts and other materials. Both in Animal (smaller) and Plant (Bigger) cells.
Cell Wall
Only Found in plant cells. It protects and supports the cell membrane. Allows specific substances to pass in and out of the cell. Made of Cellulose (carb)
Chloroplast
Contains Chlorophyll which absorbs energy from the sun to convert carbon dioxide and water into sugar via Photosynthesis. Also makes the green colouring on a plant
Cilia and Flagella
A Cilia is a short, numerous hair like structure. Flagella is longer and less numerous, it moves with a whip like motion.
