Motivation and Learning
What is Motivation?
Motivation: Goal-directed activity is instigated and sustained
Two types of broad categories:
Extrinsic Motivation: Engage in an activity as a means to an end
- Ex: Study primarily to get good grades
Intrinsic Motivation: To be involved in an activity for its own sake
- Ex: Understanding the course content is more important
- Flow: Intense form of intrinsic motivation in which an individual is in a state of complete absorption, focus, and concentration
Theoretical Views of Motivation
- Behaviorist Theories: Focus on changes in behavior that result from experiences with the environment
- Cognitive Theories: Focus on people's beliefs, expectations, and attempts to make sense of their experiences
- Sociocultural Theories: Focus on individuals participation in social environments that value and support learning
- Humanistic Theories: Focus on the whole person, and peoples attempt to fulfill their total potential as human beings
