Definition
Defined as a heavy menstrual flow that is abnormal, menorrhagia is the amount of menses that is greater than 80 mL.

Causes
Polyps which are small, benign growths on the lining of the uterus, may cause heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding.

Clinical Manifestations

Pallor, tiredness, fatigue due to anemia

Pathophysiology
Leading to decreased LH and FSH levels, which ultimately cause hypogonadism.

Lack of subsequent progesterone secretion and ovulation results in continuous estrogen production, and extreme proliferation of endometrium occurs.
Nursing Care

Nursing assessment
Subjective
Assessment focusing on the duration and severity of the bleeding as well as associated symptoms, such as pain or cramping.
Investigation of the patient’s medical and family history should focus on likely causes of menorrhagia.
Objective
Carefully examine the patient’s skin for pallor and for petechiae, ecchymoses, or other evidence of a coagulopathy.
