Clinical Manifestations

Pain that starts 1 to 3 days before periods, peaks 24 hours after the onset of periods and subsides in 2 to 3 days

Pathophysiology
Characterized by increased synthesis and release of prostaglandins, which cause hypercontractility of the myometrium.
Resulting in uterine muscle ischemia and hypoxia and, subsequently, pain

Assessment

A thorough menstrual history is essential and should include the age at menarche, cycle regularity, cycle length, last menstrual period, and duration and amount of menstrual flow.

Treatment
Pharmacological
Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs as the first line of treatment, such as Ibuprofen and Naproxen
Combined hormonal contraceptives and intramuscular, intrauterine, and subcutaneous progestin-only contraceptives.
