These observations verify earlier links between the vestibular system and awareness which showed that stroke patient after 30sec of caloric stimulation had improvements in sensory, motor, linguistic and cognitive function (Schiff & Pulver, 1999). Second, the cortical representation of vestibular sensations have been replicated across various studies, such as the sensation of verticality (supramarginal gyrus) (Kheradmand, Lasker, & Zee, 2015), body posture and self-motion (extrastriate body area, area MST) (Arzy, Thut, Mohr, Michel, & Blanke, 2006), location of body in space and weightlessness (temporoparietal junction) (Blanke, Ortigue, Landis, & Seeck, 2002; Van Ombergen et al., 2017), self-other distinction (temporoparietal junction) (Ruby & Decety, 2001) and self-location and first-person perspective (retroinsula).
