The number of endangered species has gone up over the years. There are up to 41,415 endangered species in the world, with 16,306 threatened with going extinct. this includes both endangered animals and plants.
One of the most recently recorded animal to go extinct was bramble cay melomys. Last seen in 2009 and officially declared extinct in 2019, caused by climate change and sea-level rise.
The tecopa pupfish, a native of the hot springs of the mojave desert, has the distinction of being the first animal declared extinct under the provisions of the endangered species act of 1973
