Muscular system - Coggle Diagram
Muscular system
Muscle pairs
They work in pairs one contracts and the other extends. This is called ANTAGONISTIC MUSCLE ACTION
One muscle shortens the other lengthens
Muscles contracting = agonist
Muscles relaxing = antagonist
E.g. hamstrings and quadriceps
Muscle contractions
Isotonic concentric
Shortening of the muscle (origin and insertion move closer together)
Muscle becomes fatter
E.g. quads - during the upward phase of the sqaut movement
Isotonic eccentric
Lengthening of the muscle
Usually appears in the downward phase of a movement to provide control
E.g. quads - when landing from a jump
Isometric
Muscle stays the same length and shape
No movement occurs in the muscle or body part
Balancing or pushing against something
E.g. plank or handstand
How muscles move
Origin
The end of the muscle that is attached to a fixed bone that’s doesn’t move during a contraction
Insertion
The end of the muscle that is attached to the bone that moves during a contraction
Muscle pairs
As one muscle contracts the other lengthens
Muscles contracting = agonist
Muscles relaxing = Antagonist
E.g. biceps and triceps/ hamstrings and quadriceps
