COPD (which can be caused by a few factors) results in the bronchial tubes and air sacs (alveoli), to either become destroyed or lose their elasticity in their nature. This causes some air to be trapped in a person's lungs as they exhale, decreasing the amount of oxygen they are taking in and sending throughout the body. This in turn results in the body's natural compensation mechanism to take deeper labored breaths in attempt to get more oxygen.
