Secret Diaries of Anne Lister - Coggle Diagram
Secret Diaries of Anne Lister
Taking some specific journal entries, how does Miss Lister's diary imagine opportunities for women who love women? How does she think about herself and her relationships in her Regency era context? (How might we also recognize certain racial and class privileges at work in the journal?)
opportunities for women to love women
women were able to hide their sexuality by saying they were "friends who lived with each other."
obviously this didn't work for everyone because rumors spread about Anne being a lesbian, but it at least gave the opportunity for women to express their love for each even in a secret manner.
she imagines a different and more modern approach for wIw relationships by trying to also deceive society by saying she just wants to live a life without a husband in the company of her girly friends
she was a woman before her time for sure; Anne Lister had progressive and modern ideas for women and sexualities, but she the law and social norms were against her
racial and class privilege
Although Anne Lister talks about being independent financially, she is only that way from her family and inheritance
Without her "old money" Anne most likely would have had to marry a man in order to provide herself financially
Also she is white, and if she was a person of color trying to be independent financially, it would be even more difficult
I applaud Anne for being an independent woman and also embracing her sexuality
was able to learn from literature and be educated from the money she came from as well
she was able to make a code from Greek alphabet, punctuation, and mathematical symbols in which she would not have had access to this complicated code making process
herself in Regency era
The Regency era encompassed a time of great social, political, and economic change
women were able to dress more comfortably
potentially more gender neutral components to garments such as pants/breeches
she wants more than the regular life for a woman at the time
doesn't want to marry only because she wants to marry a woman, and that's illegal
wants to not be dependent on a man which is not usual since most money comes from the husband
She's like Elizabeth Bennet in
Pride and Prejudice
meets Jo March in
Little Women
looking for her Mrs. Darcy and looking for financial stability and independence
like am I wrong..??
