Bacon Rebillion
Essentially Nathaniel Bacon created an army of angry lower lower white class called the "giddy multitude". They were promised land in America that they were never given. Bacon encouraged them to blame the Native Americans for this. However, they ended up attacking Jamestown and the governor Berkley. The upper white class was afraid of what them and what they could do. They did not want to risk having severe problems among the classes, initially caused by indentured servitude, so they made the difficult decision to turn to African slaves. A solution that would solve the white class problem and fulfill the laboral needs in the colony. Additionally, the starkly different skin colors allowed for the discrimination and dehumanization in the Black population.
Slaves over Indentured Servants (Takaki)
The amount of indentured servants slowly decreased in the the colonies. This led to a very slow increase of African slaves in the colony.
The time span of a person became greater so therefore more beneficial to get African Slaves because they would work for their whole lives unlike servants who worked 5-7 years.
Bacon's Rebellion: Differences in class among the white people. There was a massive amount of lower class white people who rebelled against the upper class white people in Virginia, they felt betrayed by America. The upper class were afraid of them and did not want there to be constant rebellions. Therefore, they turned to African slaves, who solved the class problem among white population and filled labor needs.
And because of their skin color could be easily differentiated and discriminated in their society
Slaves over Indentured Servants (Morgan)
Virginia was placed in a situation where there was a massive amount of poor white men in the colony
This was not good for the colony and upper white class men started to discuss solutions. Some even suggested slavery
They decided to restrict their freedoms but they realized that these poor white men had a lot of power and could created harm in the colony
As predicted Bacon Rebellion occurred in the colonies
Turned to Slavery because brought Virginia all of the success through labor for the landowners and also solved the white population class crisis that would have ultimately caused a greater problem in the colony
Because of the stark difference in skin color, Virginians could racialize the slaves and create laws that ensured slaves continued to work and sustained the economy in Virginia
