Topic 1: System Fundamentals
1.System in Organization
1 Planning and System Installation
1.1 Installing a New System
new system can be created in order to replace a system that is inefficient,no longer suitable for its original purpose.
1.2 The System Environment
the computer system includes hardware, software, people working with it or using iit and the immediate environment.
1.2.1 Example: Spreadsheet Tools
application software that helps in organizing data, mathematical functions, statistical functions and graphing tool
1.2.2 Example: IPv6
type of Internet addressing that uses 64 bits thus providing for more IP addresses
1.3 Changes in Environment
referred to as change management which involves various parameters and is a process of shifting individuals, teams etc. from the present state to a desired state.
1.3.2 Legacy Systems
the term refers to an old technology, hardware, system, or application program.
1.3.2.1 Compatibility Issues
different software entities or systems cannot operate satisfactorily on the same computer or on different computers linked by a local or wide area network.
1.3.3 Solutions to Change
1.keep both information systems(high maintenance cost)2.replace both systems with a new one(high initial cost)3.select the best information systems from each and combine them(very difficult)4.select one over the other(policy problems)
1.3.3.1 Software-as-a-Service (Saas)
contemporary delivery method that allows software and data to be hosted and managed centrally on a remote datacenter.
1.4.1 Alternative Installation Processes
It describes services for network transport connectivity. Naas involves optimization of resource allocation by considering network and computing resources as a unified system.
1.4.1.1 Parallel running
Parallel changeover is when both old and new system are running at the same time. This ensures that there is always one functioning system. However this is more expensive.
1.4.1.2 Pilot Running
The system is introduced to groups within the organization, this is then introduced to different sectors after it is confirmed that it is functional.
1.4.1.2.1 Phased Conversion
A company converts one module of a system at a time, meaning different parts of a service are converted at different times.
1.4.1.3 Data Migration
refers to the transfer of data between different formats, storage types and computer systems
1.5 Testing
tests if the system performs and functions correctly
1.5.1 Alpha Testing
Testing before a software is made available to the general public
1.5.2 Beta Testing
Comments and suggestions from a Beta user, feedback is given before the release.
1.5.3 Unit Testing
individual parts of the system are tested seperately
1.5.4 User Acceptance Testing
used to determine if the system satisfies the customer
1.5.5 Debugging
process of identifying and correcting bugs in a computer program
1.4 Network-as-a-Service(Naas)
3.System Backup
3 System Backup
1.1.11 Causes of data loss ........................
accidental deletion,admisntrative errors,poor data storage,building fires,not saving the files,viruses,failure,data corruption,firmware corruption,natural disasters,hackers,physical damage,power failure
1.1.12 Consequences of data loss in a specified situation
for example if the medical records of a patient in a hospital are lost, the the patient/s life can be in danger if the data cannot be retrieved, and painful examinations might have to be repeated
1,113 Range of methods that can be used to prevent data Ioss
regular backup using hard disks, firewall installation, data storage in multiple locations, removed hard copies, installation of antivirus program for protection.
2 User Focus
2.2.3 Remote training
2.2.2 Onsite training
2.2.1 Self instruction
Self study Allows the user to read at their own time
2.2 Comparison of different methods of user training
Online tutorials are more interactive and they allow for questions to be asked, for manual training iti is based on self discipline and self study
2.1.3 Printed manuals
This allows the user their own time to understand and learn. This will allow self study
2.1.2 Online documentation
Examples would be : embedded assistance, frequently asked questions, live chat sessions, online portals, remote desktop connections
2.1.1 Help Files
Help files include Manuals, email support.
2.1 Comparison of different methods of user documentation:
User documentation is shown online as well as as a hard copy. It should be well structured for easy understanding.
Software Deployment
1.1.14 Strategies for managing releases and update
