While it is always desirable that managers should also be leaders, leaders do not always hold a management position
By definition, employees report to and work for managers as part of a formal organisational structure
They carry out the manager's instructions because the manager has the authority to assign work to them, leaders on the other hand persuade people to follow them and may have no direct authority over their followers
Leadership roles vary dependent upon the relevant level within the organisation, nevertheless matter the level of management being considered, leadership is about influencing people what to do what is beneficial for the orgnisation
This means identifying what needs to be done, convincing others of this need and then motivating and engaging employees and other stakeholders to do what is required.
Leadership at all levels is a process of influencing others to undertake, agree and engage on what needs to be done and how to do it and facilitating individual and collective efforts to accomplish shared objectives
The leadership role is also strategic in that leaders are forward ,looking, determining the next best course of action and inspiring others with a vision of what could do
Operational managers are concerned with carrying out the current strategy so many scholars would argue that while all managers may have a leadership role, it is the more senior manager that will spend more time in that role
The role of the leader focuses on effectiveness and doing the right thing, thus providing direction
This necessitates an understanding of changing customer wants and needs, the marketplace and wider environment along with developing trends and forces
Both roles require the manager to motivate employees, however the leader will seek to persuade employees that the organisation's goals, purpose and direction, the effectiveness agenda, are appropriate whereas the manager, focusing on efficiency will seek to encourage the employee to be productive in their day to day work to accomplish goals
Both the manager and leader focus on goal attainment but approach this in different ways, the leader inspires, winning the commitment of followers whereas the manager ensures goals are attained through the allocation of resources and organisation
Both the managers and the leader need to be good communications though many would argue this to be more important in leadership
A person can be a leader without being a manager i.e focus purely on effectiveness and a person can be a manager without leading i.e focus purely on efficiency
Both management and leadership skills need to evolve to address particular situations. Where leaders fail to acquire and hone these skills, organisations are at risk of failure whereas those leaders who do expand their leadership skills will enhance the chances of organisational success
Follower A person who willingly accepts the guidance, command or leadership of another whom they support and admire or a person who supports a set of idea
