Gary Hamel outlines the invention and evolution of management and why it matters, starting around 1890, he notes the average manufacturing organisation had less than four employees. One generation later by 1915, the Ford Motor Company was making over 500,000 cars per year and in the intervening period, Hamel argues that 'almost all of the tools of modern management get invented'
Contemporary management has evolved from these theories and managers apply them like an assortment of tools selected according to their situation
Managers should have some understanding of the tools and specifically how, when and where to use them
