KOREA PART TWO
WHO IS TO BLAME?
TRUMAN:
- Should have backed South Korea and anti Communists forces in China more forcefully and much earlier.
- Truman's secretary of State did a speech saying that South Korea was outside the US defence perimeter. This encouraged the North Koreans as they may have believed that America would not come to the Souths aid.
- Stephen Ambrose blames Truman for trying to 'sell' NSC-68 to Congress and the Korea war was a good way to do this.
SOUTH KOREA:
- There were many border incidents caused by the South.
- Syngman Rhee was the short term trigger factor as he encouraged border harassment and made inflammatory speeches.
- Constantly pressured America for aid and support.
NORTH KOREA:
- They launched a unprovoked attack onto the South.
- Kim II Dung wanted to unite the countries and therefore, acted.
- May have believed that America wouldn't have got involved.
- He gained support from Stalin.
SOVIET UNION:
- Stalin gave permission to Kim II Sung after he visited Moscow.
- They sent military supplies including 150 T-34 Tanks
- However, it was believed that the Soviets were half-hearted because they hoped for a quick victory and once US made their position clear they backed off.
COLD WAR:
- The Americans, Soviets and China all hoped to improve their position through the Korean war.
- They wanted their own ideologies to be victorious as a way to prove to the other that they are superior.
