Endangered Native Species (Māui Dolphins)
What is the actual problem?
People go fishing and the Māui dolphins get caught in the nets.
People are not respecting their habitat by littering.
Sometimes people over fish and might catch the dolphins not meaning too.
What are some Ideas that will help solve the problems?
Use eco friendly products
When fishing, follow the rules with how many you are allowed to get.
Prohibit fishing nets and trawl nets in the shallow coastal water (Where the Māui dolphins live)
Try to keep less people going into the Māui dolphin area/home to keep them safe and away from anything that might harm them.
Educate people about the Māui dolphins and how they are endangered.
What are the negatives and problems of each solution?
In some places, the limit of fish that you can catch is very low and you may not be able to eat any more fish.
Some people are curious and like to go see Māui dolphins but if they do they might drop some rubbish or disturb them.
Which solution will be best?
We think that the best solution is to put more signs and things up about how many fish you should be allowed to catch and big companies can't catch more than 100 in one area a day.
The fish limits should be publicised in adds and articles and things so that everyone hears about it and know the fishing limits. Ideas to help save Māui dolphins should also publicised so that more and more people know about it and can help save them.
What are some positives and strengths to each solution?
When you educate people about Māui dolphins, they will learn more about them, what they need and how they live and be able to help save them.
We will be able to save our Native endangered species.
Eco friendly products help save the animals and the earth.
Māui dolphins die a lot of the time because of the nets that they get caught in and so if there were no nets in their area then there would be a lot less chance that more would die. We want to keep as many Māui dolphins around as possible!
How might different people feel about the solutions?
I think some people may be happy because we are saving native wildlife.
I think that some people won't listen and won't care and they are just rude and they will just overfish!!!!!!
I think that a lot of people would agree with our solutions that we have come up with.
Information about fishing around the Māui Dolphins home areas.
New rules have been made saying that commercial set nets are banned in many places through out the country.
These rules have been made to help support the threat management plan for the Māui Dolphins.
Drift nets have been banned all through out New Zealand waters and the trawl fishing ban has been extended further within the Māui dolphins habitat.
How many fish can you catch in a day?
The amounts of fish that you can catch in one day are all pretty similar.
You can catch a max of 10 snapper in a day for one fisher, or a min of 27kg per fisher.
