The book is structured very differently from a traditional book. It is put out like a generic survival guide, with facts, images, guides, and graphs, but has notes scribbled all around. In the story, you have picked up April's book by whatever means you have, and you are now following its pages as April had with the exception that you now have notes for the clues.
Following along in order is creative, but a bit difficult. The notes are written down in different colored pens indicating different time periods where the old pen ran out of ink, or was lost. I personally suggest reading the notes in order, and the normal survival guide alongside.
Also, the author written on the book isn't the true author as found later in the book. The cover, and everything else says the author is the in universe author, as opposed to the real life author. The book tries going for full immersion, as it was published alongside the game, as an expansion of the game's world, and a second perspective.
