On-the-job training
for more skilled jobs. involves internal courses, work shadowing and role play.
Internal courses
this is running courses inside their own business and using their own machinery and equipment. this makes the content specific for that business. this method is very effective.
work shadowing
sometimes the new employee shadows an experienced employee. they work alongside one another. the trainee learns from a more experienced worker

Most common for unskilled and semi-skilled workers. training is given at the normal place of work during normal working hours
Off-the-job Training
this type of training is provided by a specialist and takes place outside the business. the training is paid for by the business and may be on a day release or for a longer period of time.

lectures. sometimes employees attend lectures where they are given information which can later apply to this work. this can take place at a training center or a college
demonstrations. demonstrations are effective for showing how tasks should be done. trainee watches the expert and then is given the opportunity to practice the skill.
advantages
since training is done by specialists, it is usually of higher quality. employees meet people from other organisations and can exchange ideas. employees visit a new environment and are introduced to new equipment
disadvantages
the equipment/ machinery used may not be the same as the employee will use in their work place. it is more expensive. the employee is sometimes taken away from work.
