- A motivational theory in psychology comprising a five-tier model of human need.
- Started with survival issues which is basic needs, then security and lastly move to more complex human needs.
- Physiological - Requirements for human survival needs. Eg, air and shelter.
- In the time of emergency or period of disorganisation in the social structure. Eg, police and schools.
- Belongingness - The needs for interpersonal relationship motivates behaviour. Eg, trust and acceptance.
- Esteem - Self-respect, desire for reputation or respect from others. Eg, achievement and status.
- Self-actualization - The person's potential, that one can become and can be. Eg, the person desire to become an ideal parent.
EVALUATING MASLOW'S THEORY
- Values influence needs which people have different needs hierarchies.
- This theory don't cover all needs.
- Needs change more rapidly than Maslow stated.
