Generating Electricity in NZ - Coggle Diagram
Generating Electricity in NZ
Hydro Stations
Advantages
Do not contribute to global warming, are a renewable resource
Relatively cheap power source
Most common energy source in NZ
Station would create jobs
Most economically viable and efficient renewable energy source
Disadvantages
if lake levels go down, power output goes down
Usually involve flooding valleys with high environmental, agricultural, and recreational value
Most energy is from the southern alps, loses energy in cables on the way up to cities
Gas, Coal, Oil
Advantages
Mining and oil rigs create jobs
Cheapest sources of electricity and energy
Reliable
Worsen global warming due to large emissions
Look ugly and oil spills can destroy oceans and waterways
Coal mining is dangerous
Wind
Advantages
Windier in winter when more power is needed
Good fit with hydro power as can supplement low hydro output
Environmentally friendly, no emissions
Creates jobs
Disadvantages
Land dug up to put in new turbines and cables
Loud, disruptive to nearby towns
Take up a lot of land
Dependent on conditions
Pose a safety hazard in high winds
Geothermal
cheap power
Disrupt local tourist attractions like geysers
Limited to certain areas
Examining an issue
First, identify parties involved
i.e. iwi, famrers, government, businesses
Then evaluate differing views and courses of action
