Settler Colonialism
Erasure of Indigenous students
Students feel like they aren't counted
Most people assume there aren't any natives among them
Discussions can occur about cultural issues that affect native students negatively
Discussions of racism framed from PoC perspective, excluding indigenous peoples
Both parties experience oppression, but that doesn't make one more important than another
Everyone still ultimately exploiting native land
Tokenization of Indigenous students
Students feel like they and their experiences are objectified
Often asked to educate non-indigenous students which promotes the idea that they shouldn't educate themselves
Students may be included only for diversity of the group and not to share their opinions
Students are generalized to represent all indigenous people
This assumes students to be experts on indigenous matters which usually isn't true or fair
Homogenizes indigenous peoples & assumes they share same cultures, beliefs, viewpoints, etc.
Territory acknowledgements
Speakers and officials often acknowledge they are on indigenous land, but nothing more
Indigenous land was never ceded, so it was stolen
Only offering an acknowledgment dismisses the land and its people as something of the past
Legitimizes colonization and stealing of indigenous land
Should be made as a commitment to educate how people benefit from stolen land and act to promote real awareness
