BACKGROUND

1920 Japan was a major military, strong industries and a growing empire
depression hit Japan badly
China and USA put up tariffs against Japanese goods
Japanese leaders thought the solution was to have an empire providing resources and markets for goods
INVASION 1 1931
1931 incident in Manchuria
the Japanese army control the South Manchurian Railway
Chinese troops allegedly attacked the railway
Muckden incident
China use as an excuse
invade and set up a government in Manchuria which they controlled
Japan protested but no results
CHINA APPEALS
China appeals to the league
Japan argues that they needed to invade in a form of self defence to keep peace
Japan was a leading member of the nation
the league had to be careful
THE LEAGUE INVESTIGATES
long delays
officials sailed round the world to assess the situation

a year after the invasion
in this time Japan take more land from China
a decision was made
it took a year to get the report done
Japan had acted unlawfully
Manchuria was to be returned

instead of withdrawing Japan announces it will invade more of Japan
they said it was still self defense

only Japan voted against

THE LEAGUE RESPONDS
league powerless
a strong country was aggresive to another and gets away with it
no economic sanctions could happen
GB wanted to keep on good terms with Japan
Japan could easily attack the GB colonies in Singapore and HongKong
Navy was not strong enough
the league wanted to ban arm sales to Japan
members could not agree over that
they were scared that Japan would retaliate
banning trade would be irrelevant because Japan trades with USA
GB and France did not want to risk their armies in a war with Japan
they want to keep good relations
create trade links
only USA and USSR had the resources to remove Japan by force
they were not even in the league
France did not want to get involved in the Far East if the german's could then take advantage of them being defenceless
CONSEQUENCES
excuses were made for the failure of the league

Manchurian crisis significant
the League was powerless
they could not interveen or stop a WW2
Japan had commited blatant aggression
Hitler and Mussolini followed within three years
