Petroleum System - Coggle Diagram
Petroleum System
Processes
1) Generation
Hydrocarbon formed in source rock
Source rock contains dead plants & animals for million years
They transform to hydrocarbon at high T
Hydrocarbons can be found onshore & offshore
2) Migration
Hydrocarbons move through porous & permeable rocks
Hydrocarbons migrate from source rock to reservoir rock at high T
3) Accumulation
Hydrocarbons gather in the reservoir rock
Hydrocarbons are found in the traps of reservoir rocks
There must be a cap rock (seal rock) to prevent hydrocarbons from escaping
Reservoir rock must have features of high porosity & permeability
The accumulation order in reservoir rock is based on density of each component
Elements
Mature source rock
Migration pathway
Reservoir rock, trap & seal
Definition
Compasses the entire hydrocarbon formation process
