‘Because of the pursuit of shareholder value - waste and/or obsolescence, nature, and the corporation - are in conflict without a solution’ AGREE
Maximising shareholder value :
Nature
Waste and/ or obsolescence
According to studies conducted, approximately 85% of textiles are discarded into the dump each year.
This industry approximately emits 10% of carbon waste, and plays a major role in polluting rivers and lakes in third world countries. (McFall-Johnsen, n.d.)
Chemicals are a heavily used component in the clothing industry, Moreover, chemicals in cotton farming causes diseases which causes water pollution and soil degradation.
Due to water contamination used for fertilization in cotton production it heavily pollutes waters. (Nikola Davis, 2020)
Evidently, the three factors come into conflict in the pursuit of maximising shareholder value. For corporations to lower their production cost and generate higher dividends, child and forced labour are utilised in sweat shops in many third world countries. This could be seen as an ethical problem for the business and negative views from consumers. Moreover, in-order to maximise shareholder value, the fast-fashion industry have disregarded the harsh impact waste has on nature which results in long term negative effects on the planet, some irreversible.

Rapid production to increase sales and profits means that the emphasis on human welfare are less significant.
Forced child labour present in Argentina, Bangladesh, Brazil, China, and many other countries (Rashmila, 2020).
One in six people work in some part of the global fashion industry, making it the most labour-dependent industry.
73% of clothing ends up in landfill and less than 1% is recycled into new clothing (Moorhouse, 2020) due to the different fashion trends, they don’t last for a very long time, After that there is a new trend introduced.
Therefore, waste, obsolence, nature and the corporation will be in conflict due to the pursuit of maximising shareholder value.
