Identifying and Helping A Struggling Student - Coggle Diagram

- - - - Gathering "evidence" to bring to the school. Things like homework comparisons to other students, videos, asking the student if something feels "wrong", or bringing a specialist teacher to observe the student in class (2).
        
        The school agrees that there may be an issue with the student.
        
        The student is sent for testing.
        
        The test results come back with a learning disability, such as: Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Dyscalculia (1). Or other impediments to learnings such as: blindness, deafness, hearing impairments, emotional issues, autism, or Down's Syndrome. This list is not exhaustive, and mentions only a few of the learning difficulties some students may face.
        
        Prepare a IEP (individualized education program) for the student.

        Get the parents involved, notify them. The parents will not only need to be informed, but, also an active participant in improving the students chances at success (2).
        
        If the student is suspected of having a learning disability, and the school denies observation and testing; or, the student is tested and is found to not have a learning disability (2).

        Consider informing the parents of your observations, and ask them to continue to monitor the situation. As a teacher, continue to monitor the situation with all students.
