Special Education Referral Process

Step 1- Observation:
-A drastic change in classroom participation- speaking or not speaking, grade changes
-Not doing homework or other assignments
-Lack of interest
-Behavioral differences like: joking/bullying/backtalking
-Absenteeism: not wanting to come or being late
-Overly emotional
-sleeping/zone out/losing focus
-Squinting eyes/asking for questions to being repeated over and over often/speaking outbursts/speaking over others/leaning in(physical reactions)/lip reading/mimicking teachers mouth movements
Step 2- Collaborate:
Step 3- Referral to Special Education Coordinator
Completed referral is sent to the SE Coordinator to review the student's case
Step 4- Meeting between parents & SEC
Step 5- Student sent for Diagnostic Testing
Step 6- After Diagnosis
Step 7- Ongoing Support
regular meetings with Sp.Ed teacher and parent, yearly to reassess & track student progress
Teaching Strategies:
Spoken and written directions
Visual & auditory clues
Blue overlays- dyslexia
Larger prints
Larger pencils/speak into a recorder/typing notes
Chunking material into more manageable parts
Change activities often- Ex. Vocab- write spanish/english definition then draw a picture that connects to the vocab/ write a sentence with that word/teacher gives a sentences and the student changes it somehow
Change how you assess them - instead of word use a picture- assess their ability that does not focus on the use of the impairment/ changing the type of assessment
Peer instruction- top performer paired with bottom
Action Plans:
IEP - individualized Education plan (assessment of disability and what needs to be done to aid the student) Legally binding document that must be upheld
504 Plan - (physical side of the IEP plans) Ex. Sight, diabetic, Crohn’s, (legally required to provide
Disability testing is done outside of the school system. Parents must approved the testing to take place.
Possible Barriers to the Process
-Parents not receptive to the kids having issues, not being “normal”
-Barriers to contact with parents- poverty, jail, & foster care & lack of service coverage
Alternative causes for struggling in the classroom
It’s possible that have disabilities in math but not in English
Some that are gifted in languages are not in Biology
Complete referral to Special Education form
Send to all faculty that has the student in their class to share their observations
