What started jazz? It is a question that will remain unanswered forever. The first jazz recording was made in 1917, but the music existed at least in its primitive state for 20 years. Influenced by classical music, marches, spirituals, work songs, ragtime, blues and popular music of the time, jazz was already a particular form of music when it began its documentation.
It is likely that jazz was initially performed by uneducated musicians who played in marching bands in New Orleans. Music has been an important part of everyday life in this city since at least the 1890s, with bronze bands being hired to play at parades, funerals, parties and dances. It is plausible to think that musicians, who often have no music, will not play the melodies continuously, but will add variations to keep the performances interesting
