Dust Bowl of the 1930s and its effect on the environment
Animals
Herbivores start running out of options.
Causes extinction within the herbivore species, unless lucky enough to find vegetation with water reserves.
When drought ends, vegetation will be plentiful once prosperity is reached.
Dust picks up and harms animals looking for shelter.
Endangered species at risk of extinction.
Predators have harder time finding food.
Predators are forced to relocate.
Causes invasive species in other areas of country.
Makes predator species vulnerable to extinction because of required energy from eating other animals.
Plants/Vegetation
Drought causes vegetation to decline.
Dust either uproots or thirsts plants to death.
Only plants with large water reserves able to survive
Plants that are not able to survive have a chance of being completely wiped out due to soil erosion.
With time against the vegetation, even those with water reserves have chance at being killed off.
Farmers aren't able to keep up with the vast climate change.
People
For sake of project, will not be focusing on Dust Bowl's affect on people/economy.
Biodiversity
Both plants and animals affected
Animals not built to adapt to droughts struggle mightily.
Much of the animals that are herbivores are left for dead as vegetation is capped severely.
Many animals forced to either relocate or find shelter, both with very low probability of surviving.
Biodiversity of animals drops severely as few animal species able to adapt to drought and climate.
Reserves for rice and other vegetation created
Much vegetation is left behind due to lack of ability to adapt.
Very few species of plants able to adapt to this kind of drought.
Biodiversity of vegetation severely drops as a result.
Very few nutrients left in the soil of areas affected by Dust Bowl.
Hopes for end of drought, even though end of it not in sight for the farmers.
Disaster for all people, animals, and vegetation involved. Dust Bowl went on for about a decade. This decade was known as "the Dirty Thirties".
