A Spiritual path is born out of suffering
in order to manifest inner realization, we must first encounter the world through our struggles
First, we must commit to change
A path must be chosen that will lead to true enlightenment
The path must lead to a complete end of suffering
The wrong path
Eclecticism: picking and choosing from various traditions which include practices and techniques in order to meet our needs
Incomplete parts which lack cultural competence from adopted traditions
Adopted traditions are sometimes not mutually compatible
Lacks commitment to a single goal
The correct path is not obvious and requires exploration
May be faced with a new dilemma
Criteria on evaluating effectiveness of any particular path that we investigate
Gives a full and accurate picture of the range of suffering
Correct analysis of the causes of suffering
The path must remove suffering at its source
Is the Noble Eightfold path the correct vehicle to end suffering?
The four noble truths
Dukkha (the pali word for suffering)
Unsatisfaction that we experience in our lives which is deeper than pain and misery
Sorrow, grief, disappointment, despair
Buddha explains its many forms - shows up in events of birth, aging, and death
susceptibility to sickness, accidents, and injuries, hunger and thirst
Also unpleasant encounters
Loss of pleasures
Failures
Death does not stop the Dukkha
Dukkha's source is within ourselves
Greed (Lobha)
Aversion (Dosa)
Delusion (Moha)
Ignorance (Avijja): the fundamental darkness which shrouds our minds
Samudaya: The cause of suffering
Nirhodha: the end of suffering
Need wisdom (panna) in order to correct the distorting work of ignorance
Magga: the path that frees us from suffering
Majjhima Patipada: the middle way which steers clear of the 2 extremes
8 Factors:
right view
right intention
right speech
right action
right livelihood
right effort
right mindfulness
right concentration
Other defilements which strain: conceit, jealousy, ambition, lethargy, arrogance
Samsara: the wandering endless cycle
