Circular motion

Dealing with forces
-
-
draw
FBD including all forces, a coordinate system and show the net force. Make sure at least one force is towards +r
-
Uniform circular motion
-
The net force will never be 0 because there will always be acceleration. Acceleration is present whenever there is a change of direction
Acceleration is towards the middle because there is a force that pulls the objects for it to follow the circle path (Newton's First Law).
Orbit
Objects in free fall. Only the gravitational is exerted on the object. If the object is too fast, it will fly out of the circle. If too slow, it will reach the surface.
Astronauts in orbit feels weightless because there is only Fg that is acted upon them. There is no normal force, therefore they will feel weightless.
-
Action-reaction force
-
-
Attention! Fg and the normal force are NEVER action-reaction pair because Fg is the attraction between the center of the Earth and the object while the normal force is the attraction between the surface and the object.
