DEFINITION
Characterised by little or no production of melanin.
PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
Determines the colour of ski hair and eyes.
People with albinism are sensitive to sun.
The type and amount of melanin the body produces-
They are in a risk of having skin cancer.
CAUSES
Each genes provides instructions for making proteins-
To be involved in production of melanin.
It is caused by mutation of several genes.
Melanin is produced by melanocyte-
Wich are found on skin and eyes.
Mutation result in no melanin or in decline in melanin.
SYMPTOMS
Moles.
Brownish or whitish hair.
Freckles.
Blue or brownish eye colour.
Nearsightedness/farsightedness
Nystagmus
Astigmatism
Strabismus.
TESTS AND DIAGNOSIS
Description of changes in pigmentation.
Examination of the eyes.
Physical exam.
Comparison of child pigmentation to -
Other family members.
TREATMENT
Annual eye exams by opthalmogist.
Skin assessment is done to detect skin cancer.
Wear prescription lenses.
NURSING INTERVENTIONS.
Sunscreens must be applied on exposed skin.
Wear shirts with long sleeves.
Nurse will advise the patient to wear sunglasses.
Give health education into a patient on how to cope.
