Definition
An acute confusional state commences with disorientation, but may progress to altered level of conciousness, coma and death.
Causes

Metabolic imbalances, such as low sodium or calcium.
Medical condition such as stroke, heart attack,
Severe, chronic or terminal illness.

Fever and acute infection, particularly in children.

Urinary tract infection, pneumonia or the flu especially in older adults.
Exposure to a toxin, such as carbon monoxide.
Types
Hyperactive delirium-inactivity or reduced motor activity, drowsiness.

Hyperactive delirium-restlestlessness,agitation,rapid mood changes.
Signs and Symptoms
Poor thinking skills, poor memory disorientation, rambling.
Reduced awareness of the environment- easily distracted by un important things, bening withdraw.
Behavioural changes- hallucinations, disturbed sleep habits.
Emotional disturbances such as anxiety, depression and irritability.
