In 1894, there was a war between China and Japan for Korea. Japan defeated easily the huge armed forces of China
which was surprising, this war showed that Japan had dominates occidental technology and that China was
weaker than anyone thought. Then in the treaty of peace, China recognized Korea's independence and gave Japan territory in Manchuria.
Russia was concerned of the power of Japan and its new territory,
so with the help of France and Germany they forced Japan to give them back that territory.
In 1898, Russia demanded China to lease the territory to them instead. To lease means that the territory still belong to China.
China became a sphere of influence in which other nations controlled the economic development of China.
Then the USA was worried to lose their business in China, they created the Open Door Policy
which allowed all countries to trade with China.
After McKinleys' assassination, Vice President Theodore Roosevelt assumed the presidency.

A French company started the construction of the Panama Canal. In 1889, a French company abandoned its efforts to build a canal in Panama.
The United States had the Congress approval to buy the French Construction site so they continue the canal. They later offer Colombia (Panama was a province of Colombia) a large sum of money so they can continue the construction. Colombia refused.
