Chapter 22: Literacy Development and the English Learner
(Ariza & Cody)
Literacy
More than
reading
and
writing
How we
communicate
in society
Teachers need to know to support literacy:
EL
Student
knowledge
Skills
Uses of literacies
across all of their language
Student's
interest area and cultural background
Reading
It's a
complex
process
English
has a
deep orthography
Many
EL students
who speak and read Spanish may need to learn that English is
less regular, has many exceptions and written rules
The
relationship
between a
sound
and
its written letter
(in English)
Nonliterate students
will need to learn the concept of sound-symbol correspondance, new words and new sounds
Teachers with EL students should use hands on activities
to teach letter-sound relationships including manipulatives such as sound boxes, and teach phonics in context
The
ability
to manipulate sounds in a language
EL students may have difficculty
hearing
,
recognizing
or
producing
new sounds
Teachers may need
to model
new sounds and
how to produce them
It's a cornerstone to language development that supports
listening, speaking, reading and writing
Word knowledge
helps students to understand text across
many genres
Vocabulary can be
challenging
because the types of language used across academic content areas can differ quite a bit
It's the
ability to read a text quickly
and with
accuracy
Fluency as a skill
provides a connection
between word recognition and comprehension
EL students may
appear fluent and appear to read well
but
not comprehend fully what they are reading
Comprehension
It's the ability to
understand
and
interpret
texts
Teachers can support comprehension by
learning to identify
the main idea of the text,
suppording vocabulary development
and
checking frequenly
for comprehension
