Pre-assessment for Differentiation
Grade 2: Discovery- Landforms
Pre-assessment: Students complete a short assessment (Quiz) about the topic to gauge their knowledge prior to introducing it. This will help identify the students' varying levels of knowledge in order to establish a more differentiated learning experience.
Group 1
(5 students): They answered most of the pre-assessment questions correctly. (including the most difficult)
Audio Books & Videos
- can provide the best visual with informative content, helping students advance their knowledge and learn more in-depth information abut a narrowed or more specific landform of their interest.
Journal
- note taking will be a necessary tool to help these students retain and keep track of the new information that they acquired.
Research
- a more specific landform type.
New Vocabulary Note-taking
- will allow students to advance their word knowledge, by writing down new words.
Group 2
(12 students): They have some knowledge about the topic, but still need to develop higher-order thinking skills.
Graphic organizers
- can help students better identify each landform, including images or illustrations as a visual reference.
Audio Books & Videos
- can provide the best visual with informative content, in a much more simplified and comprehensive way.
Writing Activity (My Favorite Landform)
- allows the students to expand their knowledge by choosing one of the landform types introduced and illustrate it.
Flash Cards
- Landform names and definitions match up.
Powerpoint
- Types of landforms
Group 3
(5 students): They have limited knowledge about the topic.
3 students
are struggling with language and are at different reading levels and
2 students
have little to no comprehension of the topic and need to be tested further for special needs.
Vocabulary list
- allows students to first understand the terminology used and become familiar with it, in order to be able to decode the text and information more efficiently.

- are a great way to display landform types for a quick reference in class. It acts as a great guide for students to refer to during a discussion, making it easier to comprehend the information.

: provides a quick learning opportunity through various activities. 1) Landform Illustrations and word match. 2) Landform labeling activity, where students use the text feature to write the name of each landform below the image provided.
