Where?
- Major city in West Yorkshire
- Largest city in the Yorkshire and Humber region - in the North of England
General
- the city has a well-developed transport infrastructure
- has many major roads - m1 (which connects to london) m62 as well as other major roads
- The city has good rail links, with travel time to london just over 2 hours - has a canal and waterway network & international airport
How has leeds developed?
- Started out as a Saxon village but grew quickly in the medieval times
- the early wealth came from the wool industry
- Over time the textile industry was joined with the pottery industry
- The leeds-Liverpool canal was completed in 1816 providing a route to and from the coast
- The city grew to a population of 100,000 by 1850 when the railway arrived
National
- around 17% of the popualation is black & ethnic minority
- the non-british population is higher than the average city
- there were many Caribbean citizens that settled in the 1950s
- After the 2nd WW they welcomed European refugees - moved into inner city
- In 2013 it was estimated there were about 6000 to 9000 new long-term immigrants
Impacts of immigration
- character of the city is diverse because of the different groups
- the largest group of people is the student population - over 30,000 and over 7000 staff at the Uni
- the young people produce a great demand for housing stock & they are important for the local economy
- the city has provided a wealth of entertainment and food options, particularly close to uni
- about 18% of the population of the city are aged 15 and under - compared to 15% being over aged 65
- Leeds is a city which shows great diversity in it's population - around 89% of the population were born in the UK
- There are some ethnic minorities groups struggle to find high paid jobs
Living in Leeds
- Diverse city with many different cultures, languages, faiths and races
- Leeds is important for many industries, for companied such as ASDA, ARLA who both have headquarters there
- There are also TV production companies and financial instutions.
- It has a well-developed digital infrastructure which attracts new businesses as well as a rich industrial heritage.
- The city has been through many changes over the last decade and is constantly evolving
- The city council has plans to build new housing that is affordable to help the homeless issues & bring in further investment.
- Taxi drivers have to often put up with changes to the street patterns
Challenges

- unemployment, particularly among young people
- social inequality including deprivation and poverty facing young people
Divided city
- one issue is social inequality - it is the division between the wealthier and poorer residents
- The wealthy areas of Leeds are Moseley Wood and Cookridge,
- In holbeck over 15% of the residents were on Jobseekers allowance and similar in 2015
Studying the problem
- there are large areas to the North of the city which aren't struggling financially.
- there are more pubs and restaurants near the areas where there are high studentification rates - its quieter when it is uni holiday
- The crime levels are also high where there are high studentification rates.
- There can be problems with car parking when the students return for the new term
- Any streets within reasonable walking distance of the university will fill with cars, causing resentment among residents
- The students bring millons of pounds into the local economy and universities are major employers
Waste mangement
- Leeds council recycled nearly 44% of their waste but they have introduced plans to reduce further waste and improve recycling
- their waste is collected every 2 weeks
Future of Leeds
- For a city to be sustainable it needs to provide a good quality of life in a way of - Social, Economically, environmentally sustainable
- the quality of life that people enjoy today needs to be protected for future generations
- A focus on primary healthcare, investment in renewable tech and money spent on improving public transport
