PRESSURE SORES
Definition
Pressure ulcers (also known as pressure sores or bedsores) are injuries to the skin and underlying tissue, primarily caused by prolonged pressure on the skin(LB Aknin, CP Barrington-Leigh 2013)
Pathophysiology
• When soft tissues are compressed for prolonged periods between bony prominences and external surfaces, microvascular occlusion with tissue ischemia and hypoxia occurs(LB Aknin, CP Barrington-Leigh 2013)
Clinical manifestation
• Unusual changes in skin color or texture(LB Aknin, CP Barrington-Leigh 2013)
