Definition
A virus causing contagious sores, most often around the mouth or on the genitals (Xu, X., Zhang, Y., & Li, Q. 2019)
Pathophysiology
• Herpes is contracted through direct contact with an active lesion or body fluid of an infected person.

• a person with a history of infection (HSV seropositive) can pass the virus to an HSV seronegative person(Xu, X, Zhang, Y, & Li, Q. 2019)
Clinical manifestation
• Tingling, itching, or burning. Before the blisters appear
• Sores. One or more painful, fluid-filled blisters (Xu, X., Zhang, Y, & Li, Q. 2019)

Intervention
• Assess the client’s description of pain or discomfort: severity, location, quality, duration, precipitating or relieving factors.

• administer antiviral medications, as prescribed.
•Administer systemic steroids, if ordered, for anti-inflammatory effect.

Prevention
-
• Don’t share any items that can pass the virus around,
• Don’t participate in oral sex, kissing, or any other type of sexual activity during an outbreak.
• Wash your hands thoroughly and apply medication with cotton swabs to reduce contact with sores.(Xu, X, Zhang, Y, & Li, Q. 2019)
