Why is justice so important in any society?
Make sure that the people that have done wrong things are punished, and people that are wrongfully convicted to not be so
Make sure that everybody gets what they should get. This changes depending on each person, which makes this more difficult to decide
What can happen in a society where there is a lack of justice?
There can be many false negatives, or false positives
People can be convicted for no reason, or just to get rid of the person
If the government doesn't have justice, people will not trust the government very highly, and will ignore what the government says
If specific people don't have justice, then they will get away with many illegal things
To what extent is it fair for all Canadians?
Pretty fair for Canadians
Uses a jury system, randomly selected
To what extent is this true for youth?
When youth are being convicted, the things done against youth are relatively fair
Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA) helps convict youth in a reasonable manner
Pretty fair for youth, as youth are correctly treated differently from adults
Other times, youths' opinions will be ignored and not listened to
People might think that youth haven't matured yet, are not intelligent enough, or more and not take opinions seriously
There have been some times where youth have been listened to. An example is Greta Thunberg, where she has been acknowledged by world leaders and many people worldwide
What role do Canadians have to play to ensure that this is the case?
They have to keep the government accountable, and make sure they're doing their job correctly
Be active in justice, by protesting changes that they think is bad for them
Make checks and balances, and keep up with events in the world
What are things that make this difficult to maintain?
People will have different opinions on what justice is
There will be people trying to get around the justice system, constantly looking for loopholes and ways to avoid justice being done to them
