French Ancien Regime was an absolute monarchy, so the right to rule was hereditary, and said to have been given by God, therefore no one had the right to challenge them
Checks and balances
One check on Kings power, he could not raise taxes without permission from the estates general
Estates general were an assembly of representative of the three states, that only met when the king called them
Only way a French person could protest was by direct protest, or not paying taxes
