METH WEDNESDAY Chapter 14
Improving skills (Ny Gy)
Listening and Speaking (Ny Gy)
create your own listening materials (instant language lab) (B.A.)
make students record themselves as well (eg. tasks to improve pronunciation, missing words exercises, etc.) (B.A.)
podcasts (B.A.)
INTEGRATION: these tasks can be integrated into offline, face-to-face classes (B.A.)
Writing (Ny Gy)
emails(K.B)
word processors (K.B)
blogs (K.B)
websites(K.B)
social networks (K.B)
forums (K.B)
text and voice messaging (K.B)
Reading (Ny Gy)
treasure hunts & web puzzles (B.A.)
questions can be disconnected or built upon each other (B.A.)
webquests (B.A.)
there might be a product at the end (eg. a poster or a presentation, etc.) (B.A.)
Learning online B.Á.
Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), also known as Learning Management System (LMS) B.Á.
E.g. Moodle B.Á.
Something that brings a number of resources for running a course B.Á.
How can I teach with IWB? (D.E)
Share learner's work (ex. display good work, student's presentation)
Integrate Internet-based material into the lesson
Work with texts (ex. highlighting, taking out sections)
Run automated exercises (ex. drag and drop)
Use it as a normal board, but learn and try simpler features
Presentation software - making better inputs (M.N.)
minimal text (key words, headings)
be demanding on your clip art (use thought-provoking, inspiring pictures)
make a show with only pictures (teaching vocabulary)
animated grammar (sentence structures, word order)
drills (reveal pictures and words from time to time in an innovative and creative way)
download shows
Dangers with presentation software (T.M.)
The teacher interacts with her words and activities
Too many slides, too many words, no interaction
The presenter is locked into the pre-arranged order
Not upgrading, altering your presentation after a time
What can I do on an IWB? (B.J.)
Annotate
View
Show
Access the Internet
Change or erase
Revisit saved digital boards or pages
Save
Display and run automated content
Write and/or draw
Use commercial IWB materials
Some technology that education must include (Sz.Zs.)
interactive whiteboards (IWBs)
the Internet
research tools: search engines, corpora, etc.
Powerpoint and other presentation software
Powerpoint (Microsoft)(Sz.K.)
Keynote (Apple)(Sz.K.)
Impress (OpenOffice)(Sz.K.)
Prezi, Presentations (GoogleDocs)(Sz.K.)
free or cheap software
tablet computers and netbooks
iPods, music and podcast players
shared learning and social media: wikis, blogs, Twitter, Facebook
Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs), eg Moodle
virtual worlds
Warnings (S.J)
Be wary of stereotypes: not all teachers are reculctant technology users, and not all students are tech-savvy
Excuses such as "I'm not technical" or "It's not real teaching" cannot be deemed acceptable anymore, if they ever were
Beware of the honeymoon effect, when you feel like the new tool you just found is perfect and you spend too much time using it in class just for the sake of it
DO NO WRITE ON THE IWB WITH A MARKER
IWB: use it gradually, starting with the easiest "tricks" first and working up towards newer and more complex ones
INTEGRATION IS KEY (watching a 20-minute video is just as boring on an IWB as on a TV screen)
Make sure that you always really add to the on-screen content
Don't get trapped in your own ppt presentation
Upgrade and alter
You don't need to use technology all the time
Make sure you check your students' IT skills before you ask them to use a computer, then train them
Useful optional peripherals P.J.
Interactive "voting" buttons P.J.
Tablet computers P.J.
Warning notice P.J.
IWB: Interactive White Board L.K.
Portable IWB
Integrate internet based materials into the lesson e.g. images
Fixed IWB
Research better, search better-tips (G.L.)
use two or three words rather than one
use quote marks
use the minus sign
use wild cards
