free/cheap softwares
tablet computers & netbooks
presentation softwares
music & podcast players
research tools: search engines
shared learning & social media
the internet
Virtual Learning Environments
interactive whiteboards
- T.A.
what you can typically do
change or erase
– what you have written /start a new page
save
– what you have done for later retrieval
show
– images, documents etc.
write or draw
– with a special pen / your finger
annote
– previously prepared word-processor texts
view
– videos + images by using the board as a large computer monitor
access the Internet
revisit saved digital boards / pages
– from your lesson + print them out as handouts for your students
display and run automated content
– many ready-made templates -->create engaging automated exercises&activities ~ e.g. quizzes, puzzles, tests
use commercial IWB materials
– coursebooks often offer IWM versions with animated pages interactive exercises
Main types of IWB
PORTABLE IWB
- a small box that can be placed at the bottom of a standard non-interactive whiteboard / tablet PC (alternative) ~ they both require a data projector
FIXED IWB
- an electronic board fixed to the wall (usually in a place of a normal board) + projector attached to the ceiling + computer + peripherals somewhere accessible

How to make a better presentation -
a guide
- K.B.
Animated grammar
- use text-animation to make the new ending attach itself onto a verb or to show how the word order changes
Ask yourself
- make sure that you
add
to the on-screen content,
do not
let the show be their teacher, that's your job.
Make a show with only pictures
- use it for teaching vocabulary --> use lots of good images/animations/videos
Drills
- reveal words, pictures, or other cues one at a time
Be demanding on your clip art
-
stop

(in a way you find it fitting - e.g. inspiration)

Ways to teach with an IWB
- GY. R.
Share learners' work
: It is a great way to show what learners have done and display good work, review marked work, discuss drafts and work on them together
Integrate Internet-based materials into the lesson
: You can use a whole new world of materials to make your lesson more creative and enjoyable: banks of images, news websites, magazines, YouTube videos, stimulating lectures and presentations. ->
Note: Use it PROPERLY!
Work live with texts
: You can project texts to draw attention to language detail. You can highlight or underline different parts of it.
Run automated exercises
: It can encourage learners doing grammar exercises who would have turned their noses up at them in a book!
Teach as normal
: Forget all the fancy stuff and use it as you would do on any board. Start by learning to use the simple tools well!
Teaching in
virtual worlds
– N.L.
virtual simulations
set up real-life situations, role plays
eg.: a restaurant, airport, train station
virtual classroom
rent a virtual land and use it as a meeting place
equip it different from the real one
virtual field trip
pre lesson:
choose a location, prepare a worksheet about the location and meet the class in-world
in class:
compare answers and discussion
virtual task-based learning
create a location
set a specific task –> talk together, research, come to agreement and create the outcome
Reasearch better, search better - U.T.
use the minus sign to exclude words you don't want
use quote marks to search for a whole phrase
use wild cards to stand for whole words you don't know
use 2 or 3 key words
Virtual Learning Environments = VLE - Gy. B. M.
Common features:
Forums for students and teachers
Personal Learning Networks (PLN
) T.V.
An online group of students where you can discuss a course or education-related issues with your classmates.
Ability to attach files (both teachers and students)
Automated excercises, tests etc
Add-ons (eg.: wikis)
Dangers with presentation software - R.A.
Interaction between T. and S. minimalizes
Too many slides, too many words, no interaction, just reading words aloud
Overused, not uptodate presentations = dead lessons
Analysing texts
- H.R.
visual dictionaries
showing the relation between words
corpora
a database of real language (as it is said or written in real life)
word clouds
words displayed in a graphic illustration of their frequency
Practical considerations for classroom computer work - N.H.
Classroom layouts
IT skills audit
